Take a Spell
Angels in Harlem -U2
Sit a spell.
Does anyone else remember these phrases? It feels like something my Grandma Martha would have said.
Where did that phrase come from, I wonder. A spell being a magical thinger and also meaning lie down and chill for a bit.
I wonder if they’re connected. I love etymology. Off to google weird shit again.
I googled. It turns out that the word story is the root of the word spell. It also means to stay a while. I think that this word means a written down petition to whomever you pray to, too.
I think that the community created this word for all three things.
Stay and tell us your story. Spell.
Be still and craft your request. Spell.
Stay long enough for me to pray for you. Spell.
Words matter.
